Art GCSE Coursework Writing Manual
Working on your GCSE work for art class is easy when you're making art, but writing about the art can be a whole other issue. Many teachers want to see, though, that you understand the theory of art, and not just how to make art. To do this you'll need to know how to write about the different forms of art you've learned in your tenure as an art student.
Talk about experimenting
Working on your GCSE work for art class is easy when you're making art, but writing Art is experimentation, and to write about the coursework you should know about it firsthand. List the different types of art mediums and experiment with each one. Take notes on what you did with this art medium, how difficult it was for you, and things you'd do differently if you had to do it all again. All of these things will make for a compelling paper on how the different mediums work for you. It will also show that you have given each medium a chance.
Develop a list of your influences
Working on your GCSE work for art class is easy when you're making art, but writing Make a list of all the artists that influence you and discuss the specific things that inspire you from that artist. Talk about specific pieces of art and compare them to your own artwork. This will show your teacher that you have looked at other artists and art history to find things that inspire you to make your own work.
Show your ideas developing
After you have experimented and chosen an inspiration or two, show how your own artwork develops and expands from your knowledge. Pick a piece of your own art that you wan to work on. Take pictures of the original piece, or keep the original, and describe it in detail in written format. Then choose another medium and a style and experiment making your art that way. Keep going in this fashion until you're satisfied with the work you have created and can tell your teacher how you learned and expanded from your new-found knowledge.
Art means many different things to different people, and there is no right way to do art. You should be sure that you know the developed concepts of art and art history, especially if you're majoring in the field, but to write about how art is done is almost impossible. If you want to show that you can grasp artistic concepts, but you also know how to do the artwork, experiment and write your findings. Allow yourself to be influenced and discuss those influences, but also make your own art and write about how you got your art to where it is when you turn in your final project.
